How Are KYBELLA® Injections Administered?
The KYBELLA® procedure is performed in-office and can typically be completed in 30 minutes or less. During treatment, small amounts of the KYBELLA® solution will be carefully injected into targeted areas underneath the chin using an ultra-thin needle. Once administered, the unique formula—which is composed of a deoxycholic acid-based mixture—works to break down and destroy localized fat cells, which then exit the body over time through natural metabolic processes. Depending on each patient’s particular needs and goals, a series of two to six KYBELLA® sessions scheduled at least one month apart is generally needed to achieve an optimal outcome, but follow-up injections thereafter are usually not required.
KYBELLA® vs. CoolSculpting®
In addition to KYBELLA® and other non-surgical services, we offer a treatment called CoolSculpting®, which removes fat by carefully applying extremely cold temperatures to the skin to break down subcutaneous fat cells. While both procedures can effectively get rid of submental fat, we typically recommend KYBELLA® for reducing and removing fat cells under the chin. CoolSculpting® is usually better suited for treating areas with moderate to large amounts of fat accumulation, such as the stomach, upper back, and thighs.
Is There Recovery After KYBELLA®?
The recovery process for this treatment is not considered intensive. Immediately after treatment, a minimal degree of bruising and/or swelling throughout the submental region is normal, but these symptoms are temporary and should resolve relatively quickly. Most patients are able to return to normal activities within 24–48 hours, if not later the same day. While it may take a few weeks for final results to appear, the improved under-chin contour achieved with KYBELLA® can be long-lasting when an overall healthy lifestyle is maintained.
How Long Does KYBELLA® Last?
After the completion of initial sessions, the results of KYBELLA® can be permanent. However, note that while KYBELLA® removes submental fat that is already present, new fat cells can form under the chin in the event of weight gain. Patients who maintain a stable weight after the procedure usually do not have to undergo retreatment.
