How to Approach Ethnic Rhinoplasty

When approaching any rhinoplasty surgery, both function and aesthetics always need to be considered. First and foremost, our patients at Plastic Surgery of the Carolinas are questioned about breathing difficulties, history of trauma, severe allergies, or frequent sinus headaches. When discussing aesthetic concerns, it is critical for the patient to understand that the appearance of the nose cannot simply be selected from a catalogue. Just as all faces are unique, so are all noses. The role of the plastic surgeon is to understand each patient’s unique concerns and aesthetic facial proportions as well as to possess the expertise to execute the precise and meticulous surgical steps necessary to achieve the desired final outcome.

In my own practice, my patients represent a very broad spectrum of ethnicities: Caucasian, African-American, Latino, Asian (including Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and Indian), and Middle Eastern. Preserving ethnicity is crucial when planning a rhinoplasty for any patient. Otherwise, the results can appear out of place and disproportionate, and the nose may not appear to fit the face.

After learning the patient’s primary concerns (both functional and cosmetic), I help the patient decide which changes would improve breathing, enhance the nose’s appearance, and yet still preserve a natural look. A major factor in any successful rhinoplasty procedure, regardless of the ethnicity of the patient, is a good understanding of what a rhinoplasty can and cannot accomplish. In my experience, when patients have realistic expectations going into surgery, they are very satisfied with their results and have a renewed sense of confidence in their appearance.
